Writer-director David Ayer had a difficult start in life. After his parents kicked him out of his Bethesda, Maryland home, he moved to South Central Los Angeles, where he dropped out of high school and painted houses before joining the Navy. He credits his gritty LA experiences for many of his films, including his most prominent screenplay, Training Day, and his directorial debut, Harsh Times.
