Montana’s Oldest Dude Ranch!
Montana's Oldest Dude Ranch!
Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleThis is the real thing! Lazy K Bar Ranch has been owned by the Van Cleve family since 1885. Imagine one family owning an 8,500-acre ranch for 127 years! They turned it into a dude ranch in 1922 and it has stayed a dude ranch for all these years, making it the oldest in Montana. Avid outdoorsman Franklin Roosevelt stayed there, as did members of the DuPont family among others. Word of mouth spread quickly when it opened to the public and it wasn’t long before people began to arrive from all over for the fresh mountain air and breathtaking mountain scenery. At an elevation of 6,000 feet, the Lazy K Bar owns the three highest mountain peaks in the state outside of the Beartooth Range, with beautiful mountain lakes and miles of rushing trout stream. Land boundaries are checker boarded in and out along the edge of the National Forest. The best thing about a dude ranch is that it’s not a resort. Resorts are a dime a dozen but a legacy dude ranch represents real ranch life and a chance to take part - or enjoy just doing nothing! This is where home cooking, good conversation around the fire and taking care of your own horse happens.
This ranch has 26 of the most delightful antique hand-hewn log cabins you will ever hope to see. After experiencing these, you’ll forever turn up your nose at kit cabins. These were built from ranch timber back in the 1920’s and early 30’s with axe marks showing in the logs and real chinking made the old way. Each cabin is different. They’re sized between 400sf and 800sf and each has either a fireplace or a wood stove and bath. There are two small cabins without a bath, perfect for teenagers. Three meals a day are provided in the 3,000sf rustic lodge with its beamed vaulted ceilings and large stone fireplace. One can also play the piano or play pool on a pool table dating from the 1800’s. The ranch has always taken pride in breeding, raising and training their own quarter horses and is known for its fine herd.
This rare opportunity to own an original dude ranch in the mountains of Montana will not come our way again as it’s a national treasure to honor and enjoy and for the next family to pass to future generations. Mountain paradise priced at $9m.
