Paul Tagliabue was the National Football League (NFL) Commissioner from 1989 until 2006 who led the league through league expansion, team moves, billion-dollar television deals and helped make the Super Bowl the #1 sports and television event in the United States.

An exceptional high school basketball player and honor student, Paul went through Georgetown University and New York University (NYU) School of Law on full basketball and public service scholarships, was editor of the law review and graduated from NYU with honors in 1965. As a full partner with the powerful law firm, Covington & Burling, Paul represented the NFL in the $1.6 billion antitrust lawsuit brought by the rival United States Football League (USFL). Although the NFL technically lost the case, the judgement was only $3.00 and the USFL soon went out of business. When a few years later the NFL needed to find a replacement for outgoing Commissioner Pete Rozelle, Tagliabue was the logical choice. He retired in 2006 and returned to Covington & Burling where he serves as senior counsel.
