Hollywood History Home Finally Sells!
Hollywood History Home Finally Sells!
Too late! You procrastinated and now it's gone! It was a huge reduction in price to begin with and you knew you could probably get it down from there. So you sat on your hands and someone beat you to it. Go ahead, . . shed a tear. Shed a lot of them!
Part of the former estate of film director, writer and producer, Edward H. Griffith, this historic writer's cottage was where he and his colleagues would collaborate on the film of the day. Always loved by moguls of the movie industry, Laguna Beach was where they wanted to be in beach houses that commanded breathtaking views of the Pacific. This now spectacular house was found in falling-down condition by Marhnelle and David Hibbard 16 years ago, who recognized the value in its location and in its old bones. Stripping it down to everything that was still firm and reinforcing that with steel, they built it back up to exceed today's standards of design and style of materials. Chosen as the Los Angeles Times House of the Year for 2010, the Hibbards have every reason to be proud of their masterful renovation.
The upper level is devoted to a master suite and deck while the main floor below contains the glamorous kitchen with fireplace and indoor/outdoor public living areas. Narrow concrete stairs lead down to a courtyard, where an alcove was remodeled into an outdoor kitchen with a butcher-block countertop, a gas cooktop, two refrigerators, a Dutch door and a bay window. Another flight down finds the cottage's main entrance and a balcony that overlooks Picture Bay.
Today there are new owners who will be looking out over the lighthouse across to Catalina Island and will be contemplating which of Griffith's movies they'd like to watch to remind them of their elegant cottage's past. . . . . and they could have been you! Almost half of original asking price. Was $13,900,000 - reduced to $8,988,000 - sold $7,800,000.
