Two of America’s most famous homes were commissioned by Edgar Kaufmann, CEO of Pittsburgh’s Kaufmann Department Stores. In 1935, Frank Lloyd Wright designed Fallingwater for Kaufmann in rural western Pennsylvania. In 1947, Richard Neutra designed a desert vacation home for Kaufmann in Palm Springs, California. Wright also designed Kaufmann’s executive office on the top floor of his Pittsburgh flagship department store.
