They brought with them their desire for mansions and the architects who designed them became famous, such as Addison Mizner and Marion Sims Wyeth. It was Wyeth who in 1927 designed Mar-a-Lago for cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, and although today other mansions may appraise higher, it is still Palm Beach Jewel in the Crown with its lavish imported materials – some dating from the 15th century. It was her wish upon her death in 1973 that the estate be used to entertain future presidents and dignitaries.
