When he was a teenager, Sam’s father drowned when the British passenger steamship SS Vestris sank off the coast of Virginia. He was cut from his high school baseball team but later became a pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, Brooklyn Dodgers and St Louis Cardinals. He joined the Communist Party and became a lawyer, going to law school in the baseball off–season. He was known for reading literature in the dugout and quoting Shakespeare.
Sam’s former Berkeley home is also colorful and is for sale at $1.25 million.
