Copper Heiress’ CT Estate!
Copper Heiress' CT Estate!
From personal histories like Huguette Clark, the phrase, Poor Little Rich Girl, must have gained a place in our everyday language. Although she remained single after her two year marriage ended in 1930, having lived to the age of 104, maybe by not remarrying, she was on to the secret of the Fountain of Youth. She certainly didn't live in the age of fitness, megavitamins and low carb diets!
Although NYC aficionados will be fighting over her 42 room apartment at 907 Fifth Avenue (including Martha Stewart), her property that charms us the most and is currently on the market is the lovely Le Beau Chateau on 52 acres in New Canaan, CT. The 52 acres have been subdivided into 10 estate lots with open fields, mature woods, streams and babbling brook. Immaculately maintained, Ms. Clark purchased the property 60 years ago but never lived there. Instead, she had onsite caretakers living in the two brick caretakers' cottages for all those years.
This home is exquisite in every detail from the huge sunny rooms, original hardwood floors and beautifully crafted fireplace surrounds. At 12,766sf, the mansion consists of a grand staircase, 11 fireplaces, 13 ft ceilings, 9 bedrooms, a music room, library, 3rd floor sitting room and an artist's studio. What will really catch your attention is the original, but very modern kitchen by today's standards with gleaming stainless steel countertops. We believe the rectangular walled garden area was the original kitchen garden with lower wall on the south side to accommodate sunlight and a taller wall on the north side to protect from winter winds and where we think we see outlines of previously espaliered fruit trees. That's enough to give us Martha-Stewart wannabes an erratic heartbeat. Between the mature shrubs, lawns and trees, we just can't imagine a nicer place to live!
