Katharine Hepburn's Home For Sale!
Charming, genteel and with barely contained passion, Katharine Hepburn was one of those remarkable women with a style of her own and a mind of her own who lived life her own way. One could tell that even at her most demure, she was having to put a bridle on the passion that was always churning just below the surface. Remember? It was in her eyes; it was obvious even when she was trying to be still. The common denominator that propelled her work to excellence and her heady relationships with the great loves of her life, . . was passion! The truly memorable people we experience have it.
This beautiful waterfront propety in Old Saybrook has been in the Hepburn family since 1913, where she spent her summers, but lived there full time for seven years until her death at the age of 96 in 2003. One can't help but grin at the picture of Katharine next to her beloved Keep Out sign at the entrance and the wonderful flying geese suspended above the stairwell speak more to the passionate and slightly whimsical personality of the home. Perfectly situated and private, with views of the dock and the lighthouse, creativity must flow from anyone who enters. Consisting of 15 rooms in the 8,368sf home, everything is white, sunny and spacious with 6 bedrooms and 7.5 baths and with superb views out of every window. There are fireplaces to keep it cozy and expansive porches and verandas to take in the views. It tastefully combines the feeling of beach house and permanent home. Even though the original was destroyed by a hurricane in 1938, the rebuild and later total renovation holds special charm. Ms. Hepburn was an avid artist, producing hundreds of paintings, many we're sure, were inspired by this wonderful place.
