This original Playboy Mansion was a 70-room classical French brick and limestone residence, which had been built in 1899 for Dr. George Swift Isham, a prominent Chicago surgeon. The home was thought to be on a scale too grand for even a surgeon, so it was considered that the doctor may have been related to lawyer Edward Isham who practiced with Robert Todd Lincoln (son of President Lincoln), which may have explained his connection to wealth. The mansion was acquired by Hefner in 1959. For a period in the early 1970s, Hefner divided his time between the Chicago mansion and the Mansion West, moving full time to the California mansion in 1974.
The Chicago mansion boasted a brass plate over the original front door with the Latin inscription, Si Non Oscillas, Noli Tintinnare ("If you don't swing, don't ring"). Did Hugh take it with him? Original Hefner Chicago Playboy mansion now condos. Ballroom for sale at $6.7m.
