John Wilkes Booth Hideout Auction!
John Wilkes Booth Hideout Auction!
In 1865, two men appeared on the steps of Cleydael, begging medical assistance from owner, Dr. Richard Stuart. Instinctively, Dr. Stuart felt something amiss and refused medical assistance and shelter but did allow them dinner and sent them on their way. The men were John Wilkes Booth and his accomplice David Herold.
Built as a summer retreat by Dr. Stuart and his well-connected wife, Rosalie, kin to Mrs. Robert E. Lee, the Lee daughters stayed in this house for their protection during the Civil War. Listed in both the National and Virginia Historic Registries, and on a very manageable 12 acres, this is a historic renovator's dream come true!
For those not afraid of a little rip and strip and longing to live in Virginia horse country, this charming gentleman's farm is just the answer! Though Registries require that the exterior cannot be altered, just enhanced to its original state, this house comes with great bones, the coveted wraparound porch, a lifetime seamed tin roof and was likely built of oak, which once cured, sets up as strong as concrete! The extra good news is the rehab tax credits and in some cases, possible matched funds for restoration. Perfect for a husband-wife team to do all except for professionally designed and installed kitchen and baths, or for a construction crew to come in and make a full sweep. You can go ahead and open the fireplaces for stove inserts, and take advantage of all the new renovation hardware and supplies on today's market. The stables and paddock appear to be in great condition, needing just some freshening up with paint, a bushhog and a weed whacker.
With a little elbow grease and lots of love, it won't be long before you're sitting in your rockers on the porch, gin and tonic in hand, watching the horses graze as the sun sets over your manicured southern estate!
Booth attempted to hide out at this Virginia home after assassinating Lincoln. 1859 home & 12 acres valued at $299,300. To be auctioned October 7th!
