The Esherick House!
The Esherick House!
Recognized worldwide as a key building of modern architecture and one of the most studied, this 1 bedroom, 1 bath home is a marvel of design elements. Divided into two parts by a central strip, the house contains what architect Louis Kahn referred to as served spaces (primary areas) and servant spaces (corridors, bathrooms, etc.) Located at 204 Sunrise Lane in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, its copper and wood kitchen was created by Wharton Esherick, a nationally-known craftsman and artist who was also her uncle, and for whom Kahn also designed a studio.
This is a house where aficionados of fine architecture, either a couple or a single who appreciate detail, need lots of space to breathe, and who own a lot of shoes, will feel completely comfortable. (Our heads are still spinning from the huge built-in shoe closet, spacious walk-in closet room and the bathtub room by the fireplace.) That bathtub, by the way, also has a pull-out cover that turns it into a sofa! Ultimately timeless and sophisticated throughout, it's the type of building needing minimal furnishings so as not to distract from its exquisite form and finishes. Notable is the configuration of fixed windows and cross ventilation through the use of shutters set both vertically and horizontally. Aside from the rooms' spatial layout, the window-shutter combinations are another spatial achievement both in form and function. Landscaped by noted landscape architect Frederick Peck, windows are arranged to view the calming garden.
Reminiscent of the finest work of the Craftsman Period, this is a rare opportunity to own such a fine piece of architectural history. Priced at $1.5m.
