It’s likely that Harry Potter fans won’t recognize their beloved author, J.K. Rowling, when they open the cover of her latest book, The Casual Vacancy. This one is an adult book, which instead of fantasy, takes on the realities of the back-biting, gossipy and hypocritical tendencies of small town inhabitants, making us remember that the U.S. isn’t the only place that experiences much of the same. In this book she is concerned about the way the classes differentiate themselves and the hypocrisy particularly of the members of the middle class. Having experienced membership in every class from near homeless to uber-wealthy and everything in between, she knows whereof she speaks. From the time she conceived the Harry Potter theme while on a train back in 1990, to the time in 2000 when she knew she had to write this book, she had been "invisible" when poor and was noticed more and more with each added increment in wealth. Very disturbed by that display of hypocrisy in others towards her, she knew she had to get it off her chest and wrote The Casual Vacancy. Of course as a result, she has had a rush of criticism . . by what appears to be from those for whom her words hit home. With the Harry Potter books having sold more than 450 million copies in 73 languages and produced eight blockbuster movies, Rowling might be the first billionaire author who cares if the book is successful, but life no longer depends on it.

Rowling’s former home in Scotland is now on the market. She doesn’t live there now, but maybe a little of Harry Potter’s spirit still remains. She did write three of the 7-book series there. At first glance, you think, "Oh! It’s a romantic old stone cottage!" Not exactly, but the exterior old world charm, gardens and perimeter walls have been retained. Inside is an unexpected modern interior with brilliant sunlight spilling in through huge windows and walls of glass.
