President Lyndon Johnson wouldn’t recognise it now. It’s land he once owned for hunting but since 1999 when it was purchased by Italian artist, Benini, it was turned into the Benini Sculpture Ranch. Though Johnson did not live there full time, he did spend considerable recreational time there during his presidency. He built the main house at the top of Rattlesnake Mountain, the highest point along the Pedernales River Valley. The current art gallery, roughly looking as though it might have been a barn on the property during LBJ years, is joined by a woodland guest house, likely where Johnson housed hunting cronies spilling over from the main house. Since Johnson’s time, the ranch has become a venue for approximately 100 large outdoor sculptures by international artists, as well as smaller pieces housed in the 11,000 square foot barn-like studio-gallery. Hills and trails are dotted with these large-scale contemporary sculptures by 44 different artists. The gallery contains 50 years’ worth of Benini’s artwork along with that of guest artists from Italy. Benini has allowed public tours of the property throughout his ownership, and the ranch has been reviewed in publications as an interesting tourist stop for visitors to the Texas Hill Country.

The 142 acre ranch contains the main cedar and stone 2,300 square foot main home that enjoys 360 degree views from its 1,500’ hill. In the valley are the 11,000 square foot gallery and in the woods is located the 1,100 square foot guest house.

Former LBJ hunting ranch, currently the Benini Sculpture Ranch, is listed at $2.5 million.
