F. Scott Fitzgerald's Tender is the Night Inspiration!
Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleF. Scott Fitzgerald may have published Tender is the Night in the U.S., but he lived it on the French Riviera. Cap d’Antibes was his and Zelda’s location of choice and they spent much of their time in this romantic, and ever so stunning 19th Century villa overlooking the sea and the harbor from its terraces.
The Roaring Twenties, or the Jazz Age as Fitzgerald named it, was a time when alcohol flowed, parties were constant, morals were barely existent and debauchery was practiced to extreme. Young American writers flocked to Paris for inspiration and camaraderie while producing today’s classics. Fitzgerald’s group of friends included Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein and included budding artists of the time such as Picasso and Matisse.
Fitzgerald and his wife Zelda spent much of their time on the Cote d’Azur. His continuing abuse of alcohol, Zelda’s jealousy over the time he spent at the typewriter and her own deteriorating mental stability was making it increasingly more difficult to write. But the magical location yet inspired him to write this book which seemed a thinly veiled story of their own lives. When Zelda’s mental condition finally required being institutionalized, Fitzgerald returned to the U.S. to arrange for the publication of Tender is the Night and later died of alcoholic complications at the age of 44.
