George Washington Slept Here Too!
Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleWashington first stayed at the Fowler Homestead for several days during a severe winter while Revolutionary fighting was going strong. While Washington slept inside, his company of soldiers camped in the yard. Food for the soldiers was brought out from the main house and the door from which the food was passed is still preserved in its original position. Having formed a friendship with the owners, Washington later stayed at the house on his trips between West Point and Connecticut.
In the early 1780s, Washington ordered a court martial for Brigadier General Alexander McDougall be held at this house. Some claim McDougall was court martialed for insubordination, but old documents show that he was also being investigated over the questionable manner in which he paid his soldiers.
The house is a classic 1700’s farmhouse, though quite large with higher end millwork and other details that are found in many of the 18th century society homes, indicating that it was built by a higher echelon owner. At 5,500 square feet, all details are well preserved. Fascinating and rare is the stone wagon block which made it easier to step up and into a carriage, and the basin still remains that was fed by springs. There are 5 bedrooms, two of which have their own fireplaces and 8 total fireplaces - a decorators dream. Another bonus is a 2 bedroom apartment in back. In colonial style, there is a formal entry, parlor and library with fireplaces and an eat-in kitchen. Something that wasn’t here when George passed through is the Centennial Golf Course that the back yard abuts. Located in a neighborhood of many lakes, shopping and restaurants are conveniently close by.
