Smoky Mountain's Windsong Auction!
Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleWhen the first white settlers reached the Great Smokies in the late 1700s, they discovered a land of ancient mountains, abundant water, good weather and more plant and animal species than anyplace else in the world. They also found the Cherokee Indians who had been living in the Smokies for over one thousand years. The Cherokee were culturally advanced with permanent towns, croplands, a more highly developed democratic political system than ours (women voted) and a vast network of interconnecting trails.
In the 1830s, the federal government began moving the Cherokee from their Smoky Mountain homes to Oklahoma and Arkansas, in what was to be known as the Trail of Tears when thousands of Cherokee died from starvation and disease. In 1926, President Calvin Coolidge signed a bill assigning the Department of the Interior the responsibility of setting up national parks in both the Smokies and the Shenandoah Valley. Settlers, some of whom had lived there for generations, were also forced to relocate from the mountains, the same as the Cherokee before them. By 1940, President Roosevelt was able to stand at Newfound Gap with one foot in Tennessee and the other in North Carolina, to dedicate the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Today it is the number one most-visited park in the National Park Service.
Next door to the park in the Pisgah National Forest in Clyde, North Carolina and only minutes from Asheville, the 41-acre Windsong Retreat will be going to auction on October 15th.
