Santa Monica Oasis Auction!
Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleThe 1950s were good years for aspiring artists in Paris. This was particularly true for American artist and abstract impressionist, Sam Francis, who divided his time and work between Paris and the South of France. The first, intellectually inspiring in camaraderie with fellow artists, and the other, visually inspiring with ancient hillside towns and crystal clear sunlight making colors shout out and onto his canvases. Sam was from California, but in the process of perfecting his painting technique, ventured further into Europe, Tokyo, Mexico City, Switzerland and New York where he gained acclaim among international art collectors. Today his work is displayed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Kunstmuseum Basel, the Idemitsu Museum of Arts, Tokyo, and the Centre Pompidou-Musee National d'Art Moderne, Paris. In 2010, a Sam Francis 1957 painting titled "Middle Blue" was sold at auction for $6,354,500 and in 2013, "Symphony in Blue," a 1958 watercolor and gouache on paper sold at Sotheby's for $1,145,000. Having worked out of his studios around the world for most of his career, in the 1960s he returned to his Santa Monica, California studio where he continued to paint until his death in 1994 at the age of 71. A decade after his death, this studio burned to the ground but a longtime friend, Frank Damavandi, purchased the property and the cottage next door - once the home of silent film star Charlie Chaplin.
Frank Damavandi hired notable California architect, Christopher R. Sorensen, to redesign the home, fusing the cottage into the design to make the rebuild seamless. Nestled into just under half an acre in the middle of Santa Monica, entering through the heavy wood entry gates is an oasis of vegetation, pools, fountains and sounds of moving water. Sensual in every aspect, from its 500-year-old reclaimed teak to its swim-up bar in the courtyard pool, Sam Francis would have loved this artistically inspired home. Now at 12,500 square feet, the combined homes have eight bedrooms, thirteen baths, three steam rooms, glass walls, chef’s kitchen, vaulted ceilings with skylights and trails through the vegetation and water features. The tropical property is only five minutes to the beach. For more information.
