Addison Mizner was the most talked about architect by the prominent social set from Connecticut to Palm Beach in the early 1900s. He designed many opulent country homes across Long Island and co-designed White Pine Camp retreat in the Adirondack Mountains which was used by President Calvin Coolidge as his Summer White House in the 1920s. The camp still stands but is no longer a single family retreat. Today, the only one of Mizner’s palatial homes still standing north of the Mason-Dixon line is Rock Hall in Colebrook, Connecticut, which Mitzner designed in 1912. It was the last home he designed in the North before accepting the commission to design the Everglades Club in Palm Beach and went on to become the iconic architect of South Florida’s Mediterranean-Spanish Revival mansions .

Built of stone and stucco and on the National Register of Historic Places, the home is located on a 23-acre estate. It was originally owned by Jerome Alexandre, of the Alexandre Steamship Company, for whom it was designed.

Having been meticulously restored in 2005 by the current owners, updates to the home’s mechanical systems and expected 21st century luxury amenities have been added, leaving all the intricate Mizner design details intact. Within its 8,578-square-foot, five bedroom, seven bath interior is the great room with walls in coffered panels of chestnut, vaulted-beamed ceiling and large fireplace, one of seven, with the original mantel piece. A number of reception rooms radiate from the great room. Other rooms consist of a large formal dining room, library, rock-walled sun room, billiards room, media room and grotto-styled wine cellar. A tea room is accessed through a secret-panel door and opens to a Mediterranean-style patio. The chef’s kitchen has all high end appliances and a repurposed original ice box which is now the entry into a walk-in cooler.
