Bob Hope House Price Cut!
Bob Hope House Price Cut!
Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleStill on the market after first being listed in early 2013 with a price tag of $50 million, the Palm Springs spaceship/volcano house designed for Bob and Dolores Hope by John Lautner in 1973 is still looking for a buyer. Not too surprising that it is taking a while to sell since its UFO design is rather taste specific to Lautner fans and futuristic voyagers; celebrity house status at $50 million hasn’t produced a buyer for the Hope house.
Considering their generation, it’s a little surprising that the Hopes would go so far into the future in their architectural taste with a home that looks a bit like a just-landed spaceship. At 23,000 square feet under the dramatic high undulating roof, it has open spaces in the walls and ceiling which allow daylight - or stars to shine through, casting shapely shadows into the interior. These curved openings also allow for stunning views across the landscape and mountains, while appearing to be nestled comfortably into its well-designed desert landscaping and outdoor living areas. The house also has a spa with greenhouse wall, 6 bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, indoor and outdoor pools, a pond, putting greens, and a tennis court.
Though they owned three other homes in Palm Springs, this was the Hopes’ dream home that got off to a bad start when Dolores Hope and Lautner got into it over some interior changes she demanded to be made. The result was that Lautner disowned the project in the end, even though it was the largest private residence he had designed in his career.
From the 1940s to the 1990s, Bob was one of America’s favorite celebrities, a multi-talented performer who excelled as a comedian, actor, singer and dancer. He will never be forgotten for his annual tours taking entertainment to the U.S. military troops around the world. Bob and Dolores were married for 69 years - rare for any couple but especially rare for entertainment celebrities. He died in 2003 at the age of 100 and Dolores died in 2011 at the age of 102.
