Mosaic Building For New York Artists!
Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleConceived by artists, built by artists and admired by artist owners since the turn of the century, New York City’s Mosaic Building, also known as the Gainsborough Studios, is one of the city’s most interesting and well-located boutique cooperatives.
New York in the early 1900s already had many well-known artists including V. V. Sewell, August Franzen, Elliott Daingerfield and Colin Campbell Cooper. But they and their peers found the city a difficult place to work as there were few studios offering enough northern light critical to the production of fine art. These four artists and a financier formed the Gainsborough Corporation to solve the problem. Choosing the south side of Central Park for its uninterrupted northern light, they purchased a millionaire’s home, tore it down and in 1908 hired architect, Thomas Buckham, to design a building to their exacting specifications. Known today as the Mosaic Building, the facade with its handmade art tiles and a frieze by sculptor Isidore Konti, A Festival Procession of the Arts, pays homage to the fine arts and the artists who continue to live and work their craft within its walls.
Now available on the 14th and 15th floors of the eastern side of the building is this duplex studio with Central Park views through the massive 18-foot windows. Double sets of French doors open below the bank of windows to the park in summer and a large fireplace adds coziness in winter. Now a restyled contemporary space, the front of the apartment has soaring 30-foot ceilings and en suite sleeping loft with adjoining library while the south side of the unit contains a large great room with the potential for two more bedrooms. The duplex apartment in the landmarked Gainsborough Studios with stunning views over Central Park is priced at $6 million.
