At that time, both towns were riding high. Detroit was still the motor city with about 1.5 million people and St Louis had recently added the Arch to their Mississippi River landscape. USA Today recently ranked Detroit as the worst city in the U.S., just ahead of Flint, Michigan, and St. Louis as the third worst U.S. town. Rankings were based on several factors including real estate values, crime and unemployment.
