Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleEach year in February, America’s Mid-century design capital, Palm Springs, California, celebrates its architecture in a festival called Modernism Week. It’s an 11-day celebration of Mid-century modern design, architecture, art, fashion and culture which fans of the architectural style look forward to each year. Events take place in various locations throughout the Coachella Valley and include the Modernism Show & Sale, home tours, architectural walks, biking and double-decker bus tours, a lecture and film series, tours of the historic Annenberg Estate at Sunnylands, the Palm Springs Walk of Stars, classic cars, garden tours, a vintage travel trailer exhibition and much more. As downsizing and simplifying one’s life trends larger in popularity each day, many are looking at Mid-century design with renewed interest, making Modernism Week a highly attended event. One house on the tour holds particular interest with its classic design from the 1950s and its livability in 2018.
Following in the wake of the Bauhaus school and notable modern architects such as Le Corbusier, Joseph Eichler and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, architect Donald Wexler has newly created a Mid-century residence with all the clean lines and 1950’s details so loved by aficionados of the period but has, behind the scenes, added today’s amenities for minimal maintenance, convenience and comfort.
Built in classic post and beam construction, the 2,780-square-foot house has three bedrooms and three baths with den. It is sited on a large lot on a cul-de-sac with maintenance-free, drought-resistant landscape surrounded by a privacy wall. Also outside is a 45-foot salt water swimming pool, spa and outdoor shower off the master suite. Views from the interior’s glass walls and the pool terrace are 360 degrees of mountains ensuring an impressive backdrop. The 1950’s vibe is shown in the galley kitchen, though more open to the great room, the Swedish fireplace suspended from the ceiling and polished concrete floors. Stepping into today are the current high-end finishes, fixtures, remotely operated window shades and security system. Additional amenities include a large laundry room/butler’s pantry and sound system.
Newly built Mid-century house with one foot in the past and one in the future located in the Mid-century mecca of the world, Palm Springs, this Donald Wexler designed residence was a star of the city’s 2018 Modernism Week.
