A FLW Designed Beach Home!
A FLW Designed Beach Home!
With plans finished 3 weeks before his death, this home that he named In Hiding, is one of the most remarkable Frank Lloyd Wright homes we've seen that in keeping with his design criteria fits and enhances the land on which it sits. One of his last designs, the original owner of the plans received the culmination of his prolific career.
The location is exceptional! At the north end of Virginia Beach is an exclusive neighborhood with the Atlantic Ocean on the east side and lovely Crystal Lake on the west side that has a protected waterway for ocean access. This remarkable home is located on the lake with two types of docks; one floating dock to accommodate small boats and one that will comfortably contain two large yachts. The original owners, the Cook family didn't install the pool from the plans as their children were quite young and they felt it was a safety issue. In 1983, the next owners restored the property to regain its historical significance, winning an award for excellence from the AIA of Hampton Roads. They did install a large spa pool, and though this pool was not on the original plan, they did house the works in a bunker that would not be seen or heard while in operation. Naturally, being the purists that we are, we would love to see the pool that was on Mr. Wright's plan since it would definitely be the accent that would make the plan a whole. The main house has 3 bedrooms, 2 baths and the former servant's quarters would make a charming self-sufficient guest house or in-law house and is separated from the main house by the carport for complete privacy. This home was designed to our green standards of today with double walls, double glazed windows, copper roof and window screens. The renovation included two central air units and radiant floor heat as well as a fitness room and sauna. NOTEWORTHY: The furniture in the house was designed by Mr. Wright and stays with the home!
This is one of the rarest of opportunities available today, not to mention the remarkable location that gives you protected mooring as well as a gorgeous wide beach across the street! See those crab cages lying on the dock? As though you didn't have enough "Wow Factor" here, just tie a chicken neck inside of one of those cages, drop it in and see what you get! Study the pictures and you'll get the answer!
