Astor Home Bargain!
Astor Home Bargain!
Well, is it or isn't it . . . a bargain? That's up for grabs considering that quite a few more million will have to be spent to repurpose so many rooms, it could be back up to near the original price in the end. . . or you could just leave it be. But it's definitely a 1931 prewar beauty with all the attributes we love from that era: Large rooms filled with light on all sides of the 15th floor and half of the 16th. Five fireplaces with exceptional antique mantles grace the public rooms and two of the bedrooms. There are partial views of Central Park and views of Park Avenue, and the apartment has two passenger elevators and one service elevator. But most impressive is that it was chosen by the late Brooke Astor who was the epitome of taste and style and the toast of New York society.
Originally a military brat, her third marriage was to Vincent Astor, who told her, " You'll have a lot of fun spending my money when I'm dead!" And that she did, giving away approximately $195m to charity. In her last years her only child, Anthony Dryden Marshall, was convicted November 27, 2007, on indictments on criminal charges for grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, forgery, scheming to defraud, falsifying business records, offering a false instrument for filing, and conspiracy in plundering her $198 million estate. He was turned in by his son. Mrs. Astor died in 2007 at the age of 105 with Alzheimer's disease.
We look forward to the announcement of the identity of the new owner! Was $46m - sold for $21m.
