Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleThe island of Bermuda was originally settled as an extension of the Virginia colonies, later coming under British rule. Though many consider it to be a Caribbean island, in reality the 21 square mile archipelago stands unto itself in the Gulfstream 640 miles off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina on the same latitude with Savanna, Georgia. Due to its unique character of pink sand beaches, crystal clear waters and pastel colored houses, it has long been a haven for tourists and vacation homes for the rich and famous. Some who own homes there are Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones (Douglas’ mother was born in Bermuda), former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Texas Instruments pioneer James Martin and the Gorham family of DIY store fame. Mark Twain stayed there as did John Lennon in the summer of 1980 where he wrote his last album, "Double Fantasy." Early notable residents included playwright Eugene O’Neill and the illustrator of "The Wizard of Oz," William Denslow.
Construction methods on the island are unique to the environment where homes and buildings are built of limestone. Since the only source of potable water is rainfall, there are long concrete troughs along the roof lines that direct and filter it into buried cisterns next to the houses. In order to keep the rain water clean on its way to the cistern, the white roofs are painted with a special nontoxic paint.
