Ernie Els, "The Big Easy", as he is affectionately known, is an international South African pro golfer, who unlike many other PGA members, plays in tours around the world. With 65 wins since going pro in 1989, Ernie feels that by playing around the world, he is promoting golf as an international sport. The PGA disagreed and wrote him a letter strongly suggesting that he focus on the U.S. PGA Tour. This recommendation he made known to the press and publicly rejected. This ruffled the feathers of the other world tours due to the PGA’s rather pompous assumption.

Ernie and his wife, Liezl, have an autistic son. In order to find the best treatment for his condition, they searched worldwide and finally settled on Jupiter, Florida so their son could attend The Renaissance Learning Center. They have made their home at the Bears Club, Jack Nicklaus’ golf course and home course. The Bears Club is an elite golfing community and is also home to Michael Jordan and a limited number of other large estates where the names of owners are kept private.

The Els are very involved in the advancement of treating autism and have raised millions through their own foundation, Els Center of Excellence, and in conjunction with other foundations. Although the Els main residence is in England with another home in South Africa, they use their Bears Club residence as the site of charity fund raisers for autism and have recently raised $30m which will be used to add a research facility to The Renaissance Learning Center.
