Contemporary LA Home Has Ties to Errol Flynn!
Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleIn his heyday as a romantic, swashbuckling film star, 1940’s actor Errol Flynn owned the somewhat notorious and very beautiful Mulholland Farm in the Hollywood Hills above Sunset Strip. Well known as a womanizer, the farm was a popular hangout for his famous friends, with its casino, passageways, peepholes and two-way mirrors. Flynn had a 28-year film career, which included his famous portrayal of Robin Hood and starred in eight films with Olivia de Havilland and Bette Davis. During these years he lived a flamboyant lifestyle and turned his passion to sailing.
As Flynn’s career and finances waned, he lost Mulholland Farm and set out on his famed sailing yacht, Zaca, to live in Jamaica and Spain. When Flynn died at the age of 50, the only thing left was Zaca. Those few adventurers of the 1970s who happened to wander around the docks of the Villefranche, France port, saw the ghost of what was once considered to be the most beautiful and fastest private sailing yacht in the world, sadly deteriorating at its berth. Way up in the rafters of the building in the boatyard of Bernard Voisin were the huge masts, still with a slight gleam of old varnish where they had hung for ten years in safe keeping. Locals claimed that the old floating hull was possessed and that there were emanations of Errol Flynn coming from the vessel and the sound of wild parties at night. In 1979, Errol’s ghosts departed after a dual Anglican-Catholic exorcism and, in 1990, the yacht, by then sunk at its berth, was purchased by an Italian businessman who painstakingly restored it to Flynn’s original. It is once again one of the most admired yachts in the Mediterranean and has a new home in the Monaco docks under the watchful eye of the Palace. Errol would love the evolution of his yacht into the 21st century, but would he have equally loved the evolution of Mulholland Farm?
With the idea of turning Mulholland Farm into a gated enclave of four modern homes, architect Phil Brown ultimately only completed two of the four. House "A" was built in 1987 to meet the lifestyle of an entertainment industry executive, with its proximity to Mulholland Drive, the Sunset Strip, and Universal Studios. The 5,700-square-foot modern home is situated on .63 of an acre and has timeless clean lines, walls of glass and huge two-story public spaces with different floor elevations that open to pool, spa and patios. There are four bedrooms, five bathrooms, wine cellar and theatre with 35mm projection. For more information.
House "A" on the former Errol Flynn Mulholland Farm, sans casino and peep holes, is now for sale at $4.25 million.
