George Washington Doctor's Home!
Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleDr. John Cochran was born in Pennsylvania in 1730 and was surgeon general of the Colonial Army during the Revolution from 1776 until 1781. He was a close friend of General George Washington and served as his personal physician during the war.
After the Revolution, General Cochran was appointed by Washington as Commissioner of Loans. He worked in this position until he was paralyzed by a stroke. In 1790, when Dr. Cochran was 60, his son, Major James Cochran, built this home for his father where he lived for 17 years until his death in 1807. Washington had given Cochran a number of pieces of mahogany furniture for the home as a gift. When the home was sold, the Cochran family moved the valued furniture to their home in Palatine.
During the General’s period of residence, many illustrious Americans of the time visited. A favorite story was when Mohawk Chief Joseph Brant visited in 1792. The word got out and angry farmers started descending on the house. It became necessary to get him out of the house quickly and secretly as the farmers swore to kill him. General Cochran’s wife was Gertrude Schuyler, sister of Revolution War General and United States Senator Philip Schuyler. General Schuyler was a frequent visitor and the Cochran’s son, James, married his daughter. Another of Schuyler’s daughters married Alexander Hamilton, so it is likely that he too was a visitor.
The main residence has been magnificently restored maintaining its original grandeur and authenticity while providing the conveniences of today. With 4,546 square feet, 5 bedrooms and 4 baths, this scenic property includes an 1886 barn with hand hewn beams and 24 horse stalls. There is also a .5 mile training track and several other buildings and residences. Possibilities are endless! Priced at $995,000. Not surprisingly, it has just received a contract.
