George Washington Love Pad!
Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleGeorge and Martha Washington were overnight guests of friends, Maj. and Mrs. Jesse Ewell, on their honeymoon journey after their marriage just outside of Richmond, and stopped there on their way to Mount Vernon. Historical documents claim that Jefferson was also a guest of the Ewells and that Washington often stayed here later during his travels throughout the state. In time the home passed to Ewell’s daughter Frances, who married the Rev. Mason Locke Weems. Weems was Washington’s first bibliographer and was responsible for crafting the tale of Washington’s "I cannot tell a lie", which told of his cutting down the infamous cherry tree at age six.
Bel Air started out as a 438 acre plantation carved from an original King Charles’ Virginia Land Grant of 2,960 acres. Built in 1740, though not found documented, it is likely that the farmland of Bel Air was devoted to the production of tobacco which was the leading industry of the time and from which King Charles made large royalties. Jesse Ewell, also owned a tobacco warehouse in the nearby town of Dumfries.
The oldest home in Prince George County, Virginia, this is an excellent example of the restorer’s reverence for history. Every historical detail of this home has been restored with features that are almost impossible to find today, including the walk-in hearth on the ground floor where winter meals were cooked and a removable wall for large entertaining. Modern comforts have been added like granite counters, but never to the distraction of the original architecture. With 5 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, multiple family living areas and all with exquisite colonial millwork, the home rests on a perfectly sized 25 private acres of woods, open fields, formal boxwood garden and lawns. It also has eight fireplaces, including one of the largest Colonial chimneys in Virginia. Bel Air is on the National Register of Historic Places. Going to auction on April 18th. It was previously listed for $1.1m.
