Georgetown Underground Railroad House!
Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleJohn Cox was an enterprising young man who came to Washington City, now known as Georgetown in Washington, D.C., in 1799 and opened a store that sold general merchandise. In addition to catering to the local population, he also imported stock that was purchased for the Indians in bulk by the government, netting him an extra $50,000 a year, which was considerable income in the pre-Civil War era. As an importer of goods he also became a banker. There was much controversy over his lending money to the Superintendent of Indian Trade in order to obtain exclusive sales. He was later to become a colonel of the D.C. Militia during the War of 1812 and even later, the mayor of Georgetown, D.C. from 1823 to 1845. Rumor abounds that this house was the D.C. connection for the east coast route of the Underground Railroad.
