The English countryside and its beautiful country homes and castles that have spanned the ages have been the background of many novelists, poets and playwrights. A resurgence of interest exploded with Sir Julian Fellowes’ creation of the television series Downton Abbey, which kept fans glued to their television screens for six seasons. Many of the historical manor homes across England have been too much for their heirs to support and many of architectural importance have been sadly demolished.

One elegant example that has been lovingly preserved is 500-year-old Little Sodbury Manor, a Cotswold house which was said to be inhabited by William Tyndale in the 1520s and who was responsible for the first English translation of the Bible while living there. But in 1535, just a year before he had her beheaded, Henry VIII and Queen Anne Boleyn were house guests at the manor.

In the 1920s, the manor house was restored by Sir Harold Brakspear, who had also worked on the restoration of Windsor Castle. Still with many of its original features intact, the three-story, 17,385-square-foot manse has been lovingly maintained as it sits on 10 manicured acres in rural South Gloucestershire. In addition to its 12 bedrooms and seven baths, the manor has three staircases leading to the upper floors, a stone foyer with heavy beamed ceilings, formal living room, large dining hall with multi-story ceiling, family living room with hand-carved coffered ceilings, large fireplaces in every room and a panelled library. Outside, grounds are immaculately shorn and terraced with many separate garden rooms, greenhouses, swimming pool, tennis court and separate guest house.

Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn’s country getaway, updated but keeping its original features, is now priced at $10.5 million.
