Later it would run from Virginia Beach, Virginia to Santa Monica, California. During the farm workers’ migration from Great Plains prairie farms decimated by the Dust Bowl seeking agricultural employment in the West, John Steinbeck referred to it as The Mother Road. It was also the best route for cross-country truckers and military equipment relocation during World War II. By the 1950s, it became one of the most popular tourist highways in the country with tumbleweeds blowing across the road, jack rabbits entertaining children from the car windows, quaint motels, mom & pop restaurants and roadside attractions such as reptile farms and Indian curio shops.
