JP Morgan's New York Retreat!
Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleJ.P Morgan had homes on different continents, was an avid yachtsman, appreciated the arts and was an important collector of gemstones, books, pictures, paintings, clocks and other art objects. He was also the owner of the shipping company that produced the Titanic and was booked on the fatal cruise, only to change his mind at the last moment. He lived his life in the glitz and glitter of the Gilded Age among the super wealthy, but even a man who is used to the best of everything and moves within the social framework of the cream of society has to get away sometime. And that he did at his 1,500-acre Camp Uncas on Lake Mohegan in the Adirondacks. Morgan purchased the camp in the 1890s soon after it was completed. At the time it consisted of a complex of about 20 buildings with a main lodge, guest house, dining hall, farming operation and the facilities to house up to 30 staff. Morgan and his family enjoyed vacationing there until the last descendants sold the property in the 1940s. From the time of that sale it was used as a private vacation property, a museum and as a Boy Scout camp. In 1973, the compound was purchased by a couple who set about restoring it by replacing the roofs and adding heat and conveniences hidden from view of the original structure. Prior to their purchase, the majority of the land had been sold to the New York State Forest Preserve and will remain "forever wild."
The property today is on 4.6 acres with 1,700 feet of shoreline and five buildings. Having been designated a National Landmark in 2010, one of the most interesting things about this sale is the inclusion of all original furnishings, including linens and silverware with the camp name. The historical, museum-worthy handcrafted furniture and built-ins might make the property worth the $3.25 million price tag, even before the cost of the land and buildings.
Along with the 4,000-square-foot, five bedroom, four bathroom main lodge, are the Hawkeye and Chingachgook guest cabins, open-sided boathouse, children’s playhouse and the lean-to where cookouts and picnics are held. For those who absolutely must stay in touch with the modern world, there are two phone lines serving the main lodge and Hawkeye cabin, high-speed Internet, satellite television and a new 42" wall-mounted plasma television in the den. There is a wide sand beach leading into the water and plenty of lake to discover in the original Emerson Adirondack guide boat, a rowboat, and two modern canoes that are also included in the sale price.
