Southern California architect Ray Kappe’s name is frequently associated with the most important architects of the modernist era such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Richard Neutra and John Lautner. Similar to Wright in his belief that home design should bring the outdoors in and the indoors out, Kappe went on his own shortly after graduation in 1954 and took his designs steps further by creating structures of several stories with even more exposure to nature through additional glass walls, cantilevered rooms and multiple cantilevered decks. This created large volume within standard square footage. Construction was based on post and beam using natural materials, earning Kappe much recognition and many awards. During this time he was also founding chairman of the Department of Architecture at California Polytechnic State University. In 1972, he resigned and started the Southern California Institute of Architecture. Today, the school has over 3,000 graduates and considered one of the top schools of architecture in the country. Kappe is currently designing prefab homes in keeping with his original designs while staying within guidelines of sustainability.

A classic example of Kappe’s award winning design style is the Katzenstein House in Pacific Palisades which was recently listed for sale. Built in 1974 in Rustic Canyon, the 2,724-square-foot, three-story home appears to float up the hill within its lush landscape, appearing much larger than the actual square footage. Private and serene, the three bedroom, four-bath house winds its way up through a series of open decks to a heated lap pool.
