During the 19th century, many wealthy industrialists retired to the village of Skaneateles, New York and built memorable mansions on or near the lake, many of which still stand. Notable residents included Nicholas Roosevelt, of steam engine fame, and 40 years later another Roosevelt, Samuel, bought the stately columned mansion which is now known as Roosevelt Hall.
