Lloyd Wright’s Jaws House
Lloyd Wright's Jaws House
Mayan temple? No, LA of course! The entrance of this impressive structure is sometimes said to look like a great white bearing its teeth. But the Mayan temple school of thought is far more romantic. The design was by Frank Lloyd Wright's eldest son, Lloyd and was said to be the pinnacle of his residential design effort.
Though we take unusual home designs in stride today, can you imagine what people thought in 1927 when it was built! In 2002 and 2009, the home was carefully restored and brought into this century of convenience requirements by Xorin Balbes. You know how we talk about stainless steel today as though not having it dates you as a Neanderthal? But have you seen a stainless-steel toilet? Let's just hope that seat is heated! That's OK. . . In a year or so stainless steel and granite will be outdated and don't you know every decorator on earth is already salivating at the countdown? But this home will never go out of style because it's a style of its own that can't really move in any direction. It's just as glamorous today as in 1927, in fact to we non-purists prefer being able to see water features from every room regardless of what the Wright followers say!
The house also carries with it a hint of intrigue. It was rumored to be the possible site of the 1947 Black Dahlia murder! Never proven but has never stopped being fodder for the gossips!
Designed by Lloyd Wright, son of FLW.
