For so many of us, the name Mike Wallace is synonymous with the Sunday night one-hour program 60 Minutes. Depending on one’s age, some of us also knew him as a news anchor, but a lot of us never knew the versatility of Mike’s 60-year career. Wallace hosted game shows, was the voice behind commercials and even performed with Spike Jones in comedy routines. He hosted two late night interview shows and went on to make television documentaries. On one occasion he was sued by General William Westmoreland who claimed the documentary The Uncounted Enemy: A Vietnam Deception, misrepresented his position on the Vietnam war. The case was settled out of court just before the jury trial was to begin. His rather tumultuous personal life included four marriages that produced two sons. His oldest son died in 1962 in a mountain climbing accident and his youngest son is also a journalist. Wallace suffered and was treated for depression which started after the death of his son and escalated during the Westmoreland trial. He only revealed his depression to the public in interviews late in life. Mike Wallace died in June of this year at the age of 93 and his wife of 20 years, Mary Yates, followed him three months later at the age of 83. Their New York prewar apartment has recently been put on the market.

Designed by Lafayette A. Goldstone and F. Burrall Hoffman Jr. in 1929, the 12-room duplex on Park Avenue retains most of its original features such as the cork and herringbone wood flooring and detailed plaster moldings.
