New York Home Has Ties to Mary Todd Lincoln & Hollywood!
Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleThis traditional Colonial farmhouse was once owned in the 1800s by a nephew of Mary Todd Lincoln. On March 31, 1866 the house was bought by Clark Todd. He willed it to Charles F. Todd in 1886 and Charles and his wife owned the house (40 acres) until 1912. An old map from the Historical Society notes C. Todd's name at the site of the property during that time period.
Many years later the house was chosen by Hollywood location scouts for the movie Unfaithful. The 2001 film, starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane as a married couple whose marriage was falling apart, takes place in Westchester County, New York where the home is located. The home was shown in several of the film’s scenes depicting the couple’s affluent lifestyle, but the marriage deteriorates ending in the murder of Lane’s lover. Unfaithful grossed about $120 million earning Lane both Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations.
The home is located south of Westchester County’s White Plains in a neighborhood surrounded by golf courses, Long Island Sound to the east and the Hudson River to the west - a far cry from its early days as swampland and the site of a Revolutionary War battle. Its serene setting on four acres of rolling landscaped lawns and mature trees makes it feel far removed from nearby New York City. Built in the early 1800s, the 4,210-square-foot house overlooks a large pond that is home to resident herons and seasonally to varying breeds of waterfowl. Also on the grounds is a recreation building with bath which was originally a two-car garage but can be converted back or as a cabana, a swimming pool and a deer-proof kitchen garden with raised beds. Best of all are the wide covered porches from which to overlook it all from one’s favorite rocker.
The interior, though updated and renovated through the years, has not lost its historical integrity. The wide floorboards, five original fireplaces and extensive number of original built-ins and hand-hewn beams showing in some of the rooms prove that it has been an elegant home since the day it was built. Rooms include six bedrooms, some with fireplaces, six baths, formal living and large formal dining room both with fireplaces, large eat-in kitchen, family room, office/den, laundry room with outside exit, utility room and large basement. Many large windows and French doors provide an abundance of daylight throughout the entire house.
