New York Sleepy Hollow Mansion!
Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleRemember hayrides in the back of grandad’s pickup truck with all your cousins piled in while you road through dark back country dirt roads telling ghost stories? Every shadow in the woods made you feel like something ominous was going to jump out and get you. But what if that hayride was moving slowly down Sleepy Hollow Road in Mount Pleasant, New York? That was the road where Ichabod Crane met the headless horseman in Washington Irving’s enduring tale, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Irving was from Tarrytown, the location of the glen of Sleepy Hollow, and remembered the tale of the ghost of a Hessian soldier, hired by the British, who lost his head via a cannonball in a skirmish during the Revolutionary War. It was said that one could see him on horseback any dark night, still searching for his head. Irving turned that into a short story that has thrilled and frightened school children for generations.
Of course, Sleepy Hollow Road is no longer that long stretch of desolate and spooky dirt road of the past, but later became an enclave of mansions that started in the Golden Age by the wealthy industrialists and bankers of the time and close to one of the most picturesque sections of the Hudson River.
Only 30 miles north of Manhattan and now for sale, is this 13,242-square-foot 1929 Hudson Valley estate, designed by architect Mott Schmidt for New York banker, William S. Lambie. Known as Rabbit Hill, the 15-acre estate overlooks the Hudson River. Schmidt was the architect to the rich and famous such as the Astor, Rockefeller and Vanderbilt families. Rabbit Hill was designed in the classic Georgian English country house style with the restrained classical elegance for which he is known. In addition to the formal rooms, the manse has eight bedrooms, ten bathrooms and a large walnut-paneled library. It has random-width wood floors, original paneling and moldings and one-of-a-kind fireplace mantels for the five fireplaces. French doors in all the main rooms open out to the terrace with river views. The grounds contain gardens, pool, pool house and greenhouse. On June 19th, an event will be held at Rabbit Hill for fans of Mr Schmidt. Mark Hewitt, the author of the biography on Schmidt will be giving a short talk focusing on the house and Schmidt’s architecture. For more information.
