Pickfair Estate For Sale!
This is the legendary home of Mary Pickford & Douglas Fairbanks, but it's the wrong house! Back in 1919, Pickford and Fairbanks, premier stars of the silent screen, purchased the property which was a hunting lodge covering 15 acres of land for $35,000. They then went all out transforming the lodge into a 22-room mansion. In the early 30's the couple hired Wallace Neff to expand the house into 42 rooms, including 8 staff rooms. Pickford and Fairbanks then occupied opposite wings of the house until their divorce in 1936. During those years, the house was known world wide for the elegance of its parties. Invitees included major stars of the time, European royalty and intelligentsia such as Albert Einstein. Pickford remained in the house with her new husband, living in seclusion until her death in 1979.
After sitting vacant for a few years, along came Pia Zadora, voted world's worst actress, and her then husband, Meshulam Riklis, international financier, who tore down the original house to completely rebuild in 1989. The original house looked like a large cottage, however, the rebuild ended up being a magnificent mansion, much to the consternation of Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., and others. After their divorce, the house was sold to UNICOM Systems or the owner of same, Cory Hong, the current seller.
Priced today at $60m, the listing states that some updating will be needed to float it into the 21st Century, however, the 1989 photo group showed a master bath that looked pretty good by today's standards. The house now has 17 bedrooms and 30 baths. The good news is that the former 15 acres has been shaved down to 2.7, making it possible for you shave the gardening staff from 15 down to two!
