Rancho Santa Fe El Milagro!
Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleThe master planned-community of Rancho Santa Fe has long been one of Southern California’s wealthiest enclaves. Located 25 miles north of San Diego, it got its start when the Santa Fe Railroad purchased the original land grant with the idea of planting eucalyptus trees to provide railroad ties. The Santa Fe was a subsidiary of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railroad and the 8,824 acres of eucalyptus would keep the whole railroad system in ties permanently. However, they soon discovered that the wood was too soft to hold railroad spikes. What to do? More realistically thought out than the original plan, the railroad developed Santa Fe Land & Improvement Company to provide a master-planned community of country estates. They decided to develop 6,200 acres of the original land grant and when they finished laying out the community, hired the San Diego architectural firm of Requa and Jackson who were known for specializing in Spanish Colonial Revival and Mediterranean Revival designs. The architect selected to do the work was Lilian Rice, who worked on the building plans and oversaw construction from the early 1920s through the 1930s. It is one of the few places on earth with practically perfect weather all months of the year, with an average high of 73 degrees and an average low of 53 degrees; ideal for daytime sports and nighttime sleeping and where there is no need to refer to San Diego Gas & Electric with disparaging names. Community amenities include several equestrian facilities with 60 miles of trails, shops, restaurants and a world-class golf course.
In the heart of the community, one of the area’s finest estates will be going to absolute auction on August 15th. Sited on nine high acres, the 21,000-square-foot Spanish-Mediterranean home has seven bedrooms, including two master suites, eleven bathrooms, formal rooms with seated dining for 30, library, media room, 5,000-bottle wine cellar, large gourmet kitchen with casual dining for eight and bar seating for five, and a private gym. Outside is a guest casita and five-car garage with large motor court. There are two outdoor cooking stations for entertaining, an 80-foot pool and spa, tennis courts and a large citrus grove. The home’s putting and chipping green was designed by Dave Pelz. For more information.
