Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleOn July 15, 2011, that collective sigh heard around the world was when Petra Ecclestone, British heiress, didn’t buy the iconic Beverly House but instead chose the Spelling mansion to attack with black and white paint. Let’s face it. The Spelling mansion was just . . well, big. Perfectly fitting for a young girl with more money than she knows what to do with and likes to keep her name in the media.
The Beverly House, on the other hand, is huge too at over 50,000 square feet, but having been built in the 1920s in a blend of Spanish and Italian style, one immediately realizes that it exudes warmth and detailed old world craftsmanship, not to mention a fabulous history. After all, this is the home where William Randolph Hearst lived after he left San Simeon!
Originally built by banking executive Milton Getz, the house was designed by Gordon B. Kaufmann and the grounds were designed by Paul G. Thiene. Both men were considered to be the most accomplished in their fields at the time and were commissioned worldwide by those for whom only the best would do. In 1946, actress Marion Davies bought the mansion for her longtime partner, William Randolph Hearst, the most important publishing magnate of the 20th century, where they lived until his death. Currently owned by attorney and investor Leonard M. Ross for over 30 years, it is now for lease at $600,000 per month, or for the most fortunate, for sale at $115 million.
This is the home where John and Jacqueline Kennedy stayed for part of their honeymoon. It is said that they watched their first film together as a married couple in the mansion’s theatre and that it was a Hearst-produced film from the 1920s. This exquisite home and its gardens have been the backdrop for scenes in The Godfather, The Bodyguard, Topaz, Into The Night and Fletch.
That it includes 29 bedrooms, 40 bathrooms, two guest houses and a separate apartment is just a tempting taste of the whole estate. Total privacy on almost 4 acres and only three blocks from Sunset Boulevard, the star studded Beverly House can now be leased at $600,000 per month.
