Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleThe hills in the city of San Francisco are what gives the city so much character and provides phenomenal views from almost every vantage point. There are eleven hills recognized but seven of them were the original, one of the first being Telegraph Hill. Designated as a California Historical Landmark, in 1849 a tall pole was erected at its pinnacle that had moving arms. It was used to alert the townspeople below as to what type of ship was entering the harbor. This gave merchants time to assess commodity prices for the incoming cargo so they could set their prices in advance of the cargo being discharged from the ships to the pier. By 1862, the electric telegraph came on the scene and the manual telegraph on top of Telegraph Hill was dismantled.
Telegraph Hill is also home to wild parrots that were first reported in 1911 then again in 1930. Today there are several species of small green parrots, the latest to arrive and settle in from Ecuador has a bright red head and red spots on top of its wings. They make their nests in cavities of the Canary Island date palms and live off of fruits and berries in the landscape. Many say they never paid particular attention to birds until they started enjoying the antics of these colorful residents.
