Charles named it the Y.O. Ranch, bought a herd of Texas Longhorn cattle and began the Schreiner family heritage with banks, retail stores and acres of productive and innovative ranch land. In the 1950s, his grandson, Charles Schreiner III developed the first cattle registry to preserve and enhance the breed. He also brought in Angora goats and became a pioneer in the mohair wool business. Today, the Texas area where the Y.O. Ranch is located is one of the largest processors of mohair in the world. Charles III also added exotic animals such as Scimitar Horned Oryx, Blesbok Antelope, Black Wildebeest, Beisa Oryx, giraffe, and eland to his "America’s Original Game Ranch" collection where the animals have the freedom of the vast acreage to live and breed totally protected by the high fencing that surrounds the ranch’s perimeter. Entrepreneurs all, Schreiner generations have instituted ideas such as the first game ranch, livestock auctions, ranch tours and social events.
Now, almost two-thirds of the ranch is for sale, which includes 29,000 acres with main lodge, historic log guest cabins, chuckwagon eatery, auction barn with holding pens and arena, a 100-year old school house, and an 1850’s stagecoach stop that was the first Wells Fargo post office from nearby Boerne.
