The Cowardly Lion's Lair!
Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleBert Lahr was an all-around talent on Broadway, film and television from the 1920s into the 1960s. Most well-known for his part as the Cowardly Lion in The Wizard of Oz, Lahr was an award-winning actor and comedian appearing in numerous Broadway shows. Remember the Lay’s commercial, "Betcha can't eat just one?" That was Bert Lahr.
He was a versatile performer with an astute ability to tune into his audience. In 1956, Bert was acting in Waiting for Godot at the Coconut Grove Theatre in Miami, but the play fell flat and most of the audience walked out. Instinctively, Bert knew it was the fault of the director and bad advertising, but the play closed. He played the role again in New York with a different director and accurate advertising and the play was a tremendous success.
Bert wasn’t the only talent in his family. His son is an author and theatre critic for the New Yorker and his daughter and granddaughter are writers.
In 1941 Lahr bought and resided in this New England-style home on 1.3 acres in Beverly Hills. It has drawn many celebrity owners since then such as actress Betty Grable, trumpet player Harry James and the Beatles own Paul McCartney.
It’s the perfect retreat for those who left their heart in the Hamptons or in Paul’s case, England. It was decorated by Ralph Lauren to emulate a Connecticut-Hamptons estate that brings out all the best architectural features such as wood beams, dark stained hardwood flooring and massive openings in the fireplaces. Today, one is lucky to own a home with these grandfathered large fireplaces since current building codes downsize them, losing much of their character.
The private estate consists of the main house, full sized guest house, pool and tennis court, all with lushly landscaped grounds. The main house offers 7 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, media room with wet bar and wine cellar with an attached 3-car garage. The guest house has a separate street entrance with 2 bedrooms and 3 baths and an attached 2-car garage. The property has many outdoor terraces, an outdoor kitchen, and a new structure that houses a two-lane vintage-style bowling alley, game room, wet bar and powder room.
The Hollywood home of the Cowardly Lion and other notable stars is now on the market. Listed for sale at $25,580,000, the estate can also be leased for $100,000 a month.
