The House That Spins!
The House That Spins!
Bored with the view from the dining room? No problem. Just pick up the remote and spin the house until you see something that fits the mood of the dinner party. Though not the purpose for which the rotation was intended, you could if you wanted to!
Round houses have been around for ions. From the round house settlements in the Bronze age in England to Moroccan yurts, to the dome houses of the 20th Century, round houses are here to stay. No longer are they built in the round to keep evil spirits from collecting in the corners like they are in Africa, but for reasons leaning more to the eco-friendly, and let's face it, not a bad place to be in a hurricane since due to their aerodynamics they resist wind up to 174 mph! They're cheaper to build and since they don't have drafts and have less square foot area exposed to the exterior, they're less costly to heat and cool. Since most come prefab, either the company puts it up for you or your own contractor can put it up following directions in just a fraction of the time it would take to build all the surfaces required in a straight-sided home.
This one takes it a step further in that it rotates! In this case, it's rotated at the change of seasons to fine tune the passive solar function. This kit came from the French company, Domespace, and is the only one built in this country at present. With a diameter of 54 feet, the downstairs level houses 2 bedrooms and 1.5 baths and most of the living space. A circular stairway leads to the second floor private master suite, office and additional balcony. Floors are bamboo, the windows are wedge shaped and soar towards the 40 foot center ceiling, offering a wash of sunlight in the winter and positioned for shade in the summer. To add to the pleasure, the home is on 28 acres and you can walk to the Mohonk Preserve with 1,000 more acres of hiking trails and rock climbing sites.
Cutting edge housing priced at $1.2m.
