The Mary Tyler Moore Show!
Must SeeTop 10 Florida Condos For SaleIt’s not surprising that The Mary Tyler Moore Show was such a joy to those old enough to watch it every week. It aired on CBS from 1970 to 1977 and has been regarded as "one of the most acclaimed television programs ever produced." The program was a forerunner for bringing many heretofore repressed social issues into the limelight in an easy to digest comedic script. Mary played the lead as Mary Richards, a 30-year-old single woman whose top priority was not getting married but instead, establishing a career and getting the most out of her single lifestyle.
The show was bursting at the seams with well-known stars and some who became very well-known after appearing in major parts on the program. It included Ed Asner, Betty White, Cloris Leachman, Gavin MacLeod, Ted Knight, Valerie Harper and the wonderful and totally spacy character Georgette, played by Georgia Engel.
Everyone who saw the show remembers the Victorian house in the opening title sequence where Mary was renting an upstairs apartment. It was also the home of Mary’s landlady, Cloris Leachman as Phyllis Lindstrom, and her best friend, Valerie Harper as Rhoda Morgenstern. As late as 1995, Entertainment Weekly was saying that it was "TV’s most famous bachelorette pad."
Even though the house was given a fictitious address in the series, fans finally figured out the real address, and it started becoming a tourist destination with 30 tour buses a day as many as ten years after the program ended. Fans were constantly knocking on the door looking for "Mary" and drove the woman who lived there to distraction. She finally hung a sign under Mary’s supposed apartment window that read "Impeach Nixon." It didn’t work as intended and the house continued to draw many onlookers with their cameras.
Today this iconic house is for sale to someone who craves living in a 1900 Victorian that has been so perfectly restored and updated that all they have to do is move in and start living. Within its 9,500 square feet are 7 bedrooms, 9 baths, multiple terraces and upper level decks, two family rooms, turret office, gym, sauna, and much more. Many Victorian features remain such as leaded-glass transoms, bayed rooms and ornate millwork. The lot is a third of an acre with a 3-car garage that has its own turret.
