The South African Trump Home!
The South African Trump Home!
South African developer Neill Bernstein is often called the South African Trump, in recognition of his success at real estate investing. Back in 2003, he had the idea of buying deceased shopping centers across the U.S. and turning them into new, energy-efficient industrial parks intended to bring new life and jobs into economically ailing parts of the country. He bought this home in Rye, New York thinking it would be centrally located to his business interests. From 2003 until 2011, no news on his project was noticed, except for a small report in August of 2011 when the mayor of North Randall, Ohio near Cleveland announced Bernstein's purchase of Randall Park Mall. But now Bernstein is going back to South Africa from whence he came and is auctioning off his New York home, contents and cars!
Yes, the home is very nice, and it's possible he's going be losing close to $95k of his investment if this auction doesn't perform over the minimum bid of $1.8m. But the fascinating part of this auction is a package containing antiques, cars and a Bluthner grand piano. The package will be offered to the winner of the house auction for a flat $400k! The antiques are those of Gianni Versace that Bernstein bought at auction from Versace's home in Italy, and the piano is the one used by Michael Jackson and Madonna for their concerts in London! The cars are pretty snazzy too, such as the limousine once owned by Bear Stearns president Alan Schwartzor, a Jeep and a Range Rover! If the house buyer opts out on this special package, immediately it will go back up for auction to the existing bidders with an opening bid of $400k. Here he may lose over a quarter million, not even counting the cars!
So for whatever reason the Donald Trump of South Africa has for selling out and taking flight, it gives some lucky person the opportunity to make a valuable purchase at huge discount! Brookside Estate is a 7,500sf Westchester mansion housing 6 bedrooms, 5 full and 2 partial baths, floating staircase, home theatre, gym, custom wine cellar and staff quarters. Auction date is Sunday, March 4th!
