Coming up for auction on April 17th is the 818-acre historic Bath Alum Estate. Located in Millboro, Virginia in the Allegheny Highlands, halfway between Skyline Drive and Warm Springs, the land was already known for its restorative warm springs with high alum content as early as 1800. In 1848, John W. Frasier built a hotel on the grounds which became known as Bath Alum Springs. The hotel was quite luxurious in its day and attracted notables such as Thomas Jefferson, General Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. But the start of the Civil War brought accommodations to a close and it became a temporary hospital for the confederate soldiers. After the war, it resumed operations as a hotel until the 1890s. One of the original guest books is still a part of the estate and will convey to the new owner. In 1930, Clinton Hester purchased the property and built the manor house and barn using the original bricks from the historic hotel that once stood there.
In April, the 1930 brick manor house with its massive two-story white columns will be auctioned with acreage, long-paved runway and three airplane hangars, brick barn and greenhouse-enclosed swimming pool. An additional six residences and 31 more tracts will also hit the auction block.
Well located in near proximity to Roanoke, Harrisonburg, the large Lexington equestrian center and Washington, D.C., Washingtonians are known for flocking to the nearby Homestead Resort at every opportunity, including Thomas Jefferson and 21 other presidents. Appraised at $7,866,100, the entire 818-acre undivided estate can be sold to the highest bid over $4 million. For more information.
